How to celebrate Palentine's Day

So it’s another year, another V-day. Whether you’re in a relationship, or newly/forever single, here are some things you can do to avoid all the general in-your-face noise about all things Valentine’s – and celebrate a better day instead… Palentine’s!

1. Reevaluate what Valentine's Day is

Let’s be real – there’s a whole load of hype surrounding Valentine’s Day. Ads plastered everywhere you look, roses loitering the entrances of supermarkets; everything practically screaming that you must be in a couple on the 14th February or you’re doomed forever. Who says you can’t buy yourself some flowers, or eat an entire box of heart shaped caramel filled chocolates from M&S? You don’t need a partner to give you gifts, treat yourself! Here we'd also like to point out that the word “Valentine” derives from the Latin word valentinus, meaning worthy, strong or powerful. So when you think about it this way, it’s not about couples at all!

2. Throw a get together with your pals

Grab your pals and throw yourself a lovely get together to celebrate your friendship instead – that’s still love! Whack on a super cheesy film and enjoy each other’s company whilst gorging on film treats – and don’t forget to grab yourself a box of tissues for the tears you’ll have to wipe when watching romcom after romcom. Why not go out for a meal with your mates instead too? Restaurants are not for couples only on Valentines day, enjoy those overpriced set menus and indulge! Heart shaped dough balls at Pizza Express? Yes please…

3. Take some time to reflect on your past relationships

This one might be a little hard to do if you simply just don’t want to think about your exes; but remember that relationships come in many forms that aren’t just romantic ones. You can use the day to reflect on any of the not so healthy relationships you’ve had in your past (be it old friends, or ex-colleagues) – use this time to appreciate the fact you’re so much better without them, and how far you’ve come. Yay you!

4. Pass the love forward

All in all, when you really look at the basis of Valentine’s Day, it’s all built on one thing: L-O-V-E. Tell your family, friends and anyone who is dear to you how much you love them. Spread that love; and not only to them – but also to yourself! This Valentine’s, bathe in strength and self love, and spend it with those who keep your heart racing. Appreciate those who care about you, and most importantly yourself!

Happy V-day from the team at SpareRoom!
