And Just Like That, Carrie’s Back!
Almost a year after a Sex and the City reboot was announced, And Just Like That has FINALLY hit our screens. The show follows our fave New Yorkers; Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York-Goldenblatt (minus the fabulous Samantha Jones), revealing how their lives have changed since they last graced our screens in 2010 in the second SATC movie.
But, before we pour ourselves a cosmopolitan and tune in, we take a trip down memory lane, back to 1998 when our beloved TV show first premiered. Before all the heartbreaks (and there were many), weddings and babies, Carrie was living in the Upper East Side, buying $485 Manolo Blahnik shoes on her $2 a word columnist salary, and paying $700 a month for her apartment. Yep, you got that right. $700 for a one bed one bathroom apartment in the Upper East Side. That was ludicrously cheap, even in 1998!
To find a one bed, one bathroom apartment close to $700 today, Carrie would have to move to Philadelphia, PA. Can you imagine Carrie hopping on a two hour train to Manhattan for brunch with the girls? This is the woman who wouldn’t even get a cab to Brooklyn! The average monthly rent in the Upper East Side today is $1,622, a small fraction of what Carrie paid back in 1998...and that’s just for a room in an apartment share. A one bed would set her back close to double that.
Let’s just say Carrie would have to sacrifice her lavish lifestyle in order to afford her apartment today... or strut down the streets of Philadelphia instead of Fifth Avenue!
