How confident are landlords?
The UK’s rental market has been on a rollercoaster ride over the past 15 months. With a string of lockdowns, and constant uncertainty over which industries will be able to reopen, tenants have found it tricky to make plans. That means a lot of people staying put.
However, as things gradually begin to ease, and people in their twenties start to get their first vaccinations, there’s growing confidence amongst renters. But does that translate into confidence for landlords? We decided to find out.
We asked a sample of over 300 landlords across the UK a simple question:
'Are you confident in the rental market right now?'
52% said yes, while 48% said no. Pretty evenly split. Things get more interesting when you look at the numbers regionally.
In London, the split was 38% yes vs 62% no. Outside London it’s almost exactly the opposite - 59% yes vs 41% no.
We can break things down a little more by region (although this comes with the caveat that we’re not looking at huge numbers at this stage, more of a finger in the air sense of what’s happening).
The most confident regions were East Midlands, North West, South West and Yorkshire & Humber.
The least confident were London, Wales and East Anglia.
