Introducing our new podcast Home Again
Season one is out now; listen wherever you get your podcasts!
Presenters Stacey Dooley and Matt Edmondson, comedian Guz Khan, and rugby player Meg Jones are among the line-up of celebrities, sports personalities and influencers who feature in season one of Home Again, a new podcast from SpareRoom, out now!
You might have noticed that here at SpareRoom we devote quite a bit of time to tracking rents, and looking at what’s going on in the rental market. We hope it helps you make more informed decisions when you’re looking for your next place to live.
How much it costs to rent, and why rents keep going up, dominates most conversations about housing, and that’s really important to keep talking about.
But the people and the emotions wrapped up in our homes tend to get sidelined.
It’s something we’ve been keen to put right.
We want to talk about home as well as about housing.
And that’s why we’ve been busy making a podcast. It’s called Home Again, and we can’t wait for you to listen to it!
“What does home mean to you?” is a question co-hosts Matt and Ella explore with every guest, including documentary maker Stacey Dooley – who has not only found her dream forever home, but has stayed in dozens of other homes dramatically unlike her own all over the world – and comedian and actor Guz Khan, who bought his family home from a strange neighbour with a dark secret hidden under his floorboards.
For some, like Radio 1’s Matt Edmondson, ‘home’ has been a stage for a coming of age: a place for flatmate crockery wars and dressing up as Peter Jackson.
And for international rugby player Meg Jones, home is for hosting, and you’re very welcome to raid her fridge.
The format is simple. After an ice breaker, guests pick three homes that have shaped them and explore how they’ve contributed to who they are and what they’ve achieved.
Home Again’s co-hosts are Matt Hutchinson, who has been SpareRoom's official mouthpiece for more than 20 years and also hosts an award-winning bluegrass music podcast, and SpareRoom’s trend-spotting social media expert Ella Chisholm.
Matt says: “Home is the most important thing in our lives. Where we live, and who we live with, profoundly affect how we feel about ourselves. Our homes ground us, centre us and fuel our sense of who we are as people at the deepest level.
“Yet so many of the conversations we have as a nation about housing end up feeling like they're really about affordable people storage and we forget to talk about home. So we wanted to explore and celebrate what ‘home’ really means to people and how where we live shapes us and becomes part of who we are.”
Ella says: “Home as a concept is something we can all relate to, but everyone’s interpretation is so personal. That’s what makes this podcast so interesting. The conversations it has inspired have been heartfelt, comforting, nostalgic, and also very honest. Perhaps because it’s at home where we’re our truest selves.”
